MANNY PACQUIAO, THE LEGACY OF THE PAC-MAN

In boxing we often here the quote “future hall of famer”, some fighters achieve enough during their career they are being touted as future inductees while they are still competing in the ring.

In other cases it takes time, to look back in retrospect to recognise the achievements of a fighter is a common occurrence. Manny Pacquiao’s fellow countryman Flash Elorde was inducted into the hall of fame in 1993, 22 years after his retirement from the sport and 8 years after his death in 1985.

Some active fighters are guaranteed a home at 360 North Peterboro Street, Canastota, NY, even if they where to never win another bout. Two names that spring to mid are Roy Joner Jr and Bernard Hopkins who have surely done enough in their illustrious careers to secure their legacy; even if they where to never win another bout. I would place Manny Pacquiao in this bracket.

Before the rise of Pacquiao it was Garbriel (Flash) Elorde, also from the Philippines who was widely regarded as the best fighter to come out of the Asia-Pacific region. In today’s game many; if not all believe Pacquiao has surpassed his fellow countryman. Others lay the claim that the Filipino icon is most likely the greatest ever southpaw to grace a ring.
It could be argued that Pacquiao surpassed the achievements of Elorde around the same time he was being labelled “The Mexicutioner”. The Filipino fought two wars with Marco Antonio Barrera and Juan Manuel Marquez, and an unforgettable trilogy with Erik Morales, Overall Pacquiao came out on top. Other Mexicans or fighters from Mexican decent to fall to the fists of the Filipino post millennium Include Lucero, Velazquez, Larios, Solis, Diaz and De La Hoya.

With this the sensation from the Philippines had surly cemented a legacy, but what came next was the Golden key to the door at Canastota. In 2008 we witnessed the accent of a feat never before witnessed in the sports long history. The Pac-Man was on the move and decided to compete in yet another weight calss, the Filipino fought at Lightweight, Junior Welterweight and Welterweight. Winning titles at the first timer of asking in each division Pacquiao had become the sports first seven divisional champion (Flyweight to Welterweight).

During this reign of terror Pacquaio sent each fighter to a deep dark place where they re-evaluated their career in the ring. David Diaz remained inactive for 15 months after losing his WBC lightweight title to Manny Pacquiao, in a bout where the Filipino was totally dominant before stopping Diaz in the ninth. Oscar De La Hoya retired after the beating he suffered against Pacquiao. Ricky Hatton has been out of the ring for over a year since his devastating second round knockout loss to Pacquiao at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas. Miguel Cotto has taken an unusually long hiatus. We while await the ramifications on Pacquiao’s most recent victim, Ghanaian Joshua Clottey,

Boxing News: Pacquiao - Mayweather Latest

The Pacquiao – Mayweather talks enter a second day of mediation in Sta. Monica, California, hosted by retired federal judge Daniel Weinstein.

No news yesterday was good news, indicating the team are working together to try and find a solution to drug testing that would satisfy both camps. Thousands of fans across the globe wait in anticipation on the outcome of what would surely be the biggest grossing fight in the sports long history.

Pacquiao’s promoter, Bob Arum, called the March 13 bout of last week due to undefeated American boxer Floyd Mayweather requesting Olympic style drug testing before the fight, Pacquiao back in his native Philippines was said to have been livid at the accusations of him taking any performance enhancing drugs, and filed a defamation of character law suit against his Money Mayweather, Mayweather Sr and Golden Boy promotions; who are acting on the behalf of Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Bob Arum stated Manny Pacquiao would defend his title on March 13 regardless, and set a Jan 19 deadline before looking elsewhere for an opponent. Arum mentioned Paul Malignaggi and Yuri Foreman as possible opponents.

Enter retired judge Daniel Weinstein, who was brought in to try and find a workable solution that suits both camps, Arum has stated they will adhere to any testing so long as it’s carried out by the Nevada state athletic commission, and also hinted the possibility of hosting the fight at the Cowboy’s stadium was still an option.

Both teams have been issued with a gag order, preventing any discussion with the media until the talks are over. “The longer the talks continue the better” said Fred Sternberg “that means they are working at it”.

Bob Arum Gives Team Mayweather a Deadline

The very latest scandal in the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs Manny Pacquiao super-fight is the demand by the Mayweather camp for Manny Pacquiao to undergo Olympic-style drug testing leading up to the fight March 13, 2010.

Perhaps the smartest thing Mayweather has done so far is to partner up with Golden Boy Promotions, allowing them to negotiate on his behalf and utilizing their substantial muscle and network. Mayweather's demand that the Olympic U.S. Anti Dopers Association (USADA) be the organization that conducts the tests is most likely because of Oscar De La Hoya's personal relationship with the head of this group. Considering that "Olympic-style drug testing" means the testing would be at random and as often as the USADA would like the relationship with De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions is a huge advantage. Especially now that everyone knows Pacquiao is superstitious about getting blood drawn in general, much less right before a fight. (This superstition was born when Pacquiao was blood-tested before his first bout against Erik Morales, which he lost.)

Team Pacquiao has refused such random tests and instead, have offered to give blood directly after the fight. The USADA claims that a scheduled blood test would give Pacquiao's team the opportunity to shoot him up with a masking agent and thus render the test meaningless.

So it seems they are at an impasse and the fate of the super-bout hangs in the balance.

Is this a pressure tactic designed by Floyd Mayweather Jr. to ultimately avoid fighting Manny Pacquiao? There are many inconsistencies within Golden Boy Promotions' protocol that would make it seem so. While negotiating the PPV bout between Shane Mosley and Zab Judah in 2008 (the fight never got made,) Golden Boy CEO, Richard Schaeffer refused the Olympic-style drug testing requested by the Judah camp, stating "Whatever tests they [the Nevada State Athletic Commission] want them to take, Shane will submit to that. We are not going to do other tests than the Nevada commission requires. The fact is Shane is not a cheater and he does not need to be treated like one."

Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach has stated that they will adhere to the rules and tests enforced by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), which includes extensive drug tests through urine analysis, a method that NSAC Executive Director, Keith Kizer considers less invasive than blood testing. "Urine tests are not only cheaper, they are more effective and there are no risks of nicking a blood vein or causing an infection," Kizer explains. "If blood tests are administered in the locker room, something like nicking a vein or excessive bruising would force us to cancel the fight, not to mention the risks of infection, administering a test in that kind of environment. " Kizer states "Our goal is to deter the use of drugs [by athletes] in the first place." It is Kizer's belief that if drug tests aren't strictly enforced, the athletes who don't normally use performance-enhancing substances may feel compelled to do so in order to even the playing field. "Blood tests are not as effective as urine tests in most cases," Kizer says. "As far as I know, the only test that shows up better in blood is EPO (blood-doping), which is a long-term test that should be administered over the course of months and months in order to be accurate." When asked whether he thought Manny Pacquiao uses steroids, Kizer immediately answers "No. We've tested Manny Pacquiao several times, including the fights during his climb through the weight classes and he has always tested clean."

Roach has even proffered a letter from the NFL, arguably the strictest professional league when it comes to drug-testing, which would state that blood testing is unnecessary and less effective than urine or saliva tests. Though a blood test has been developed for human growth hormone (HGH,) the test has not been proven effective or reliable, as it has never detected HGH in any of the athletes tested, including all of the athletes at the Olympic Games of 2008.

A Brief History

Mayweather was accused of ducking the mega-fight in May, 2009, when he announced his first fight out of retirement would be against Juan Manuel Marquez. The announcement came on the day of Pacquiao's fight against Ricky Hatton. Fight fans and media outlets started calling Mayweather out for his apparent avoidance of fighting Manny Pacquiao, though claiming to himself be the true pound-for-pound king of boxing. Brian Kenny of ESPN went head-to-head against Mayweather in an on-air interview (click to see video clip,) being the first public figure to officially accuse the former pound-for-pound champion of dodging Pacquiao. Mayweather may have suffered his first comeuppance at the hand of Brian Kenny, but the real blow came when ticket sales to his comeback fight against Marquez were dismal. The fight got moved from July 18, 2009 to September 19, 2009 due to an alleged rib injury suffered by Mayweather, but many people have speculated that the real reason for the postponement was to build the fight and increase ticket and projected PPV sales. Mayweather dominated his fight against Marquez, who was forced to gain over 10 pounds for the bout. Mayweather even came in two pounds overweight, tipping the scales further in his favor. Instead of regaining the respect of fans for beating the pound-for-pound second best in Marquez, Mayweather suffered further criticism through the media and fans. Hip Hop icon, Eminem's Sirius radio station, Shade 45, had a phone interview with the tarnished former pound-for-pound champion on October 29th, 2009, attacking Mayweather for protecting his record and not fighting anyone who would test him. Hip Hop star "RA the Rugged Man", a guest on the show and a veritable boxing encyclopedia, did most of the talking in the no-holds-barred conversation (click to hear audio clip)

Conversely, Pacquiao went on to fight one of the the welterweight division's most feared fighters, Miguel Cotto and in a stunning TKO victory in the 12th round, affirmed his position as boxing's pound-for-pound king. During Pacquiao's post-fight interview, fans chanted "we want Floyd!" repeatedly, begging Larry Merchant to ask who Pacquiao would like to fight next. Pacquiao gave the usual answer, stating he would fight whomever his promoter put in front of him. Mayweather immediately went on record, harping to anyone who would listen that Manny was avoiding the fight by not specifically calling Mayweather out when asked who he'd want to fight next. Mayweather stated "Tell Manny Pacquiao to be his own man and stop letting everyone including his loudmouth trainer, talk for him. If Manny Pacquiao wants to fight me, all he has to do is step up to the plate and say it himself." During coverage of Manny Pacquiao's LA victory party, days after the Cotto fight, a KTLA Los Angeles reporter asked Pacquiao "For the record, do you want to fight Mayweather?" to which Pacquiao simply replied, "for the record, yeah."

This may have forced Mayweather's hand as far as starting negotiations for the fight of the decade, but since then, fight fans are left wondering whether he will actually go through with it. The latest blood-testing hoopla only confirms the fans' worst fears that this much-anticipated fight may not get made as it seems Mayweather's camp is trying to find any feasible way to back out of the fight while saving face.

Freddie Roach states "I'm not going to let my fighter endure any kind of blood test so close to the fight. We don't work for Mayweather. I'm perfectly happy complying with whatever the Nevada State Commission asks of us." As it is, Mayweather insisted on having the fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas instead of in Dallas, Texas, which would have been much more lucrative. Though Pacquiao didn't express a preference of where the fight should be located, Roach believes that having the fight at the MGM, or "Floyd's backyard" as he put it, was enough of a compromise.

Inside Scoop

Insiders say Golden Boy has tentatively agreed to use the tests enforced by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, but only if the NSAC standards are also adhered to in the weight clause, reducing the $10 million penalty per pound over from the contracts to $600 thousand per pound over. Roach has no problem with this, stating "I don't care how much the penalty is. If Floyd shows up overweight - we won't fight him."

Roach goes on to say that negotiations are already underway with WBO NABO Light Welterweight champion, Paulie Malignaggi as well as WBA World Light Middleweight champion, Yuri Foreman. A win over Foreman would make Pacquiao a world champion in a record-breaking eight different weight classes, to which he already holds the record at seven titles, beating Oscar De La Hoya's six and besting Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s five.

Talk has also surfaced that Pacquaio plans to sue Mayweather for defamation of character.

In My Opinion

Will this fight get made? Many arguments can be made for either side, but I believe it will get made in the end. Mayweather has already succumbed once to holding negotiations after countless accusations that he is ducking Pacquiao and for the most part, the media and fans are still not backing him up even after this latest attempt to scandalize the fight. He is left with no leverage and no way out other than admitting cowardice, or sustaining (read: faking) an injury / infection that would prevent him from fighting for the next several months - which might happen. And if it does, you heard it here first.

Manny Pacquiao vs Migule Cotto, 14-Nov-2009. MGM Grand, Las Vegas, NV

As the dust settles on the dawn that gave us a new Heavyweight Champion, we now turn our attentions to the most anticipated bout of the year. This Saturday we will witness a showdown between pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao and welterweight titleholder Miguel Cotto. Manny Pacquiao aims to make history by becoming the sports first seven weight world Champion. He faces tough Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto, whose WBO Welterweight title will be on the line giving the Filipino the chance to move to seven weight champion.

The Filipino won his first title in the Flyweight division in 1998 weighing a mere 112 pounds, way south of the agreed weight for Saturday night’s bout at 145 pounds. Over the next decade the Filipino successfully climbed the divisions taking some impressive scalps along the way like Marquez, Morales, Barrera and De La Hoya. In his last fight Pacquiao, 30, the national hero of the Philippines, scored a sensational knockout of Ricky Hatton to win the junior welterweight title on May 2 at the MGM Grand. The victory gave Pacquiao a world championship sixth weight division, an honour he currently shares with Oscar De La Hoya.

Cotto (34-1, 27 KOs), a titleholder at 147 pounds, had agreed to drop below the welterweight limit for the fight. Pacquiao, the 140-pound junior welterweight champion, wanted him to come all the way down to 143 pounds. Cotto refused. Ultimately, they agreed on a 145-pound maximum weight.

Pacquiao (49-3-2, 37 KOs) will have the clear speed advantage in this bout. He showed the Boxing world what his speed could do even at the higher weight against the likes of Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton he also showed he can bring his explosive power stopping his last three opponents inside the championship distance.

Miguel Cotto on the other hand will come into the ring as the naturally larger man, having fought at junior welterweight and welterweight for his entire career. He also has superior boxing skills, while Pacquiao is the more dynamic offensive fighter. The Pacquiao camp is also hoping that forcing Cotto to drain down to 145 pounds will leave him weaker, and Pacquiao more able to capitalize on that vulnerability.

Which man will have the edge come fight night? Some people wonder how much Miguel Cotto has left in the tank after his beat down from Margarito, however, he has rebounded and gutted out a tough win against Joshua Clottey, in a bout that seen Cotto’s eye open up badly in the second round, another variable to think about. Many believe the cut may not have healed and with Pacquiao being so accurate with his shots; the cut may well come into the equation.

Pacquiao – Mayweather Car Crash

A bout that we expected to hit a few speed bumps along the way has now came to a halt in what can only be described as a head on collision. Last week the blogosphere went into meltdown after a simple disagreement between the camps of Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. over how to handle drug testing for their March 13 mega-fight.

Today things are so out of control that the potential biggest money fight in boxing history is looking unlikely. Manny Pacquiao is reported as being livid at the accusations of him taking performance enhancing drugs. The Filipino and national hero says he brushed aside all the ridicules comments coming from the Money Mayweather camp, but became incensed when people in his native Philippines started asking him if he really took performance enhancing drugs and if he had cheated his way to becoming the No. 1 boxer in the world,"

Law suit

Enough is enough. Said Pacquiao, “These people, Mayweather Sr, Mayweather Jr. and Golden Boy Promotions, think it is a joke and a right to accuse someone wrongly of using steroids or other performance enhancing drugs," Pacquiao denied that he has ever used any banned substance and has passed all of his drug tests. "I have tried to just brush it off as a mere pre-fight ploy but I think they have gone overboard."

"I have instructed my promoter, Bob Arum, to help me out in the filing of the case as soon as possible because “I maintain and assure everyone that I have not used any form or kind of steroids and that my way to the top is a result of hard work, and a lot of blood spilled from my past battles in the ring, not outside of it. I have no idea what steroids look like and my fear in God has kept me safe and victorious through all these years."

Floyd Mayweather Sr., has repeatedly accused Pacquiao of taking illegal substances and points to him rising through seven weight divisions to win titles in a record seven divisions while maintaining his speed and power.

Last night Bob Arum was making plans for an alternative bout for Pacquiao to defend his welterweight title on March 13 against former junior welterweight titlist Paulie Malignaggi in the event the fight with Mayweather can't be finalized. Ironically, Malignaggi has also repeatedly accused Pacquiao of using performance enhancing drugs, however something tells me Paulie will think twice regarding such comments for the opportunity to face the pound for pound king.

Mayweather insists upon US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) conducting drug tests for the fight under World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) procedures, opening the fighters to random blood tests at any time and in the days before the fight.

Pacquiao does not want blood drawn at any time near the fight, especially the potential for a disruptive early morning call, and wants a private firm such as those who handle US team sports to conduct a compromise set of tests at specific times, not including the days before the fight.

Arum said he is proposing that the Nevada commission handle the testing. It typically conducts only post-fight urine tests and, in some cases, pre-fight urine tests. However, Arum said the commission was willing to conduct additional urine and blood testing if the camps asked for it.

"We're not giving up on this fight, Greenburg said.”We'll just keep the lines of communication open. That's all you can do."

Mayweather, 40-0 with 25 knockouts, was regarded as the world's top pound-for-pound fighter before a 19-month layoff that ended last September.

Pacquiao, 50-3 with 38 knockouts, staked his claim on the pound-for-pound crown in Mayweather's absence by knocking out England's Ricky Hatton in the second round last May and stopping Miguel Cotto in the 12th round last month.

Pacquiao insists he has never used any drugs and his trainer, Freddie Roach, has condemned the opposition camp's demands for heightened levels of testing, stating: "We have passed every test ever given to us. We go by the commission rules, since when does the fighter make up the rules?"

Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather will it happen ?

The moment Kenny Bayless stepped in to call a hault to the fight on Saturday night the debate started, Will we see a mega-fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather. In truth this was already being debated by many who favoured Pacquiao to win. Unlike the fighters them self we fans can look beyond the fight at hand, however not looking over Cotto many decided to keep tight lipped showing respect to the Puerto Rican. So now the debate rages, we want Mayweather chanted the crowd in the 16,000-seater arena at the MGM Grand casino. As Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, described it, it’s a fight the world wants to see. Moments after Pacquiao’s historic win over Miguel Cotto for his world title in a seventh weight class. The only voice missing was that of Floyd Mayweather.

The following day Floyd Mayweather said in an Interview "The thing is with Pacquiao I don't see any versatility as a fighter; he's a good puncher but just one-dimensional."

Mayweather also believes he is on a hiding to nothing in taking on the fight and would be expected to win easily. "I'm in a no-win situation. If I beat Manny Pacquiaodo you know what they are going to say? 'You are supposed to beat him, you are Floyd Mayweather, you are the bigger man'. If I knock him out they'll say 'you're supposed to knock him out he's been knocked out before'.

"I'm in a no-win situation and when I beat him no one is going to be surprised because he's been beaten before; whatever I do to Pacquiao has been done before - he's been beaten on three occasions. And if I knock him out I don't want the world shouting because he's been knocked out twice before.

Now before the fight on Saturday night many had Manny Pacquiao as the Pound for Pound number one, others had both Pacquiao and Mayweather tied at the top. Now I am pretty sure after the fight on Saturday night all those who did have a tied top spot where rushing to amend their list and anoint the Filipino there outright number one. So this is reason alone why Floyd Mayweather should step into the ring with this man. With a ring alias of “Money” we know what Floyd Mayweather is all about and the lure of possibly one of if not the biggest grossing fight in history my guess is the fight will be made.

The purse and how it should be split, there is no doubt Money Mayweather will demand the bigger slice and it’s right there the stalling will begin, Someone must give Mayweather a reality check and tell him he is no longer holds the No 1 Pound for Pound and neither does he have the following or pulling power as the Filipino.

Manny Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KO)

Pacquaio is the aggressor, who has shown a willingness to take a punch to give one, as well as a constant desire to finish fights even when he’s well ahead on a scorecard. The Filipino is a national hero and fights for his people.

Floyd Mayweather (40-0, 25 KO)

Mayweather is the tactical defender, whose elusive ability is often referred to as poetry in motion; always the type of fighter that looks to score points and attend a post-fight press conference free of damage.

I truly hope and pray a fight of this magnitude and Importance can be made, Boxing can hold its head up high this year with some great match up’s having taken place and the birth of the Super Six Tournament, a concept that will give us the true Super Middleweight Champion.

Miguel Cotto What Now ?

What does the future hold for the Puerto Rican, Miguel Cotto had feasted at the top table of the boxing banquet, but in the magnificent Manny Pacquiao he bit of a little more than he could chew. Some are talking of retirement, I I think this is a little premature as the Puerto Rican looked in great shape on Saturday night. I think a rest may be in order then a possible match-up with the winner of Shane Mosley vs Andre Berto a fight scheduled for early 2010
