The moment Kenny Bayless stepped in to call a hault to the fight on Saturday night the debate started, Will we see a mega-fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather. In truth this was already being debated by many who favoured Pacquiao to win. Unlike the fighters them self we fans can look beyond the fight at hand, however not looking over Cotto many decided to keep tight lipped showing respect to the Puerto Rican. So now the debate rages, we want Mayweather chanted the crowd in the 16,000-seater arena at the MGM Grand casino. As Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, described it, it’s a fight the world wants to see. Moments after Pacquiao’s historic win over Miguel Cotto for his world title in a seventh weight class. The only voice missing was that of Floyd Mayweather.
The following day Floyd Mayweather said in an Interview "The thing is with Pacquiao I don't see any versatility as a fighter; he's a good puncher but just one-dimensional."
Mayweather also believes he is on a hiding to nothing in taking on the fight and would be expected to win easily. "I'm in a no-win situation. If I beat Manny Pacquiaodo you know what they are going to say? 'You are supposed to beat him, you are Floyd Mayweather, you are the bigger man'. If I knock him out they'll say 'you're supposed to knock him out he's been knocked out before'.
"I'm in a no-win situation and when I beat him no one is going to be surprised because he's been beaten before; whatever I do to Pacquiao has been done before - he's been beaten on three occasions. And if I knock him out I don't want the world shouting because he's been knocked out twice before.
Now before the fight on Saturday night many had Manny Pacquiao as the Pound for Pound number one, others had both Pacquiao and Mayweather tied at the top. Now I am pretty sure after the fight on Saturday night all those who did have a tied top spot where rushing to amend their list and anoint the Filipino there outright number one. So this is reason alone why Floyd Mayweather should step into the ring with this man. With a ring alias of “Money” we know what Floyd Mayweather is all about and the lure of possibly one of if not the biggest grossing fight in history my guess is the fight will be made.
The purse and how it should be split, there is no doubt Money Mayweather will demand the bigger slice and it’s right there the stalling will begin, Someone must give Mayweather a reality check and tell him he is no longer holds the No 1 Pound for Pound and neither does he have the following or pulling power as the Filipino.
Manny Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KO)
Pacquaio is the aggressor, who has shown a willingness to take a punch to give one, as well as a constant desire to finish fights even when he’s well ahead on a scorecard. The Filipino is a national hero and fights for his people.
Floyd Mayweather (40-0, 25 KO)
Mayweather is the tactical defender, whose elusive ability is often referred to as poetry in motion; always the type of fighter that looks to score points and attend a post-fight press conference free of damage.
I truly hope and pray a fight of this magnitude and Importance can be made, Boxing can hold its head up high this year with some great match up’s having taken place and the birth of the Super Six Tournament, a concept that will give us the true Super Middleweight Champion.
Miguel Cotto What Now ?
What does the future hold for the Puerto Rican, Miguel Cotto had feasted at the top table of the boxing banquet, but in the magnificent Manny Pacquiao he bit of a little more than he could chew. Some are talking of retirement, I I think this is a little premature as the Puerto Rican looked in great shape on Saturday night. I think a rest may be in order then a possible match-up with the winner of Shane Mosley vs Andre Berto a fight scheduled for early 2010
